The vision for UPSKILL AFRICA INITIATIVE started in 2016, after the xenophobic attacks of 2008 and 2015 further undermined the unity of the fragile community of local South Africans and foreign nationals. Tito Haguma, the founder of UAI, has worked with different initiatives on peace and unity in Africa, and in the course of this work he noticed that many unemployed South African youth, whilst foreign nationals, both youth and adults, had generally managed to find employment and were able to secure their own livelihoods. Being aware of the fact that many foreign nationals have a lot of skills to offer, he began to dream about setting up spaces in which foreign nationals and South African nationals could mutually share their different skills and experiences with each other, and work together on skills development. This is how the idea of creating a safe space to foster better relationships between African people of all races/tribes through skills transfer (vocational training) was born.
