The overall goal of UPSKILL AFRICA is to bridge the national divide between local South Africans
and foreign nationals in an environment of vocational training. Participants learn skills that
allow them to be players in their own socio-economic development, sustained livelihoods, and at
the same time be brought into relationship with people of different races, ethnicities and
nationalities.
In order to achieve its overall goal, UPSKILL AFRICA employs a holistic approach to radical
personal and social transformation, that includes:
Daily study of the Christian Scriptures, to learn Godly values and principles for life.
Mental health and Story Therapy workshops.
Community engagement and generative conversations.
Basic health awareness and first aid training.
Skills Development and Small Business Management trainings.
Each skills development class lasts for a duration of 6 months and consists of 20-30 participants.
Each class consists of a mix of foreign nationals and South African citizens. Over the next 2 years
UPSKILL AFRICA INITIATIVE aims to have directly impacted the lives of over 120 women and men through
skills training in sewing, and to have expanded its skills development programme to include cell
phone repairs further impacting the lives of 60 youth.
Through its holistic approach UPSKILL AFRICA INITIATIVE expects to have achieved the following
social impact (outcomes):
Fostered greater understanding and tolerance between South Africans and foreign national communities.
Improved sustained livelihoods of participants and their families.
Increased skill and experience in developing small and micro enterprises (sewing and cell phone repairs.
Increased self-awareness and resilience, as well as increased empowerment in attending to their own mental and physical health.
Growth in personal faith and knowledge of the bible.
Gained knowledge and skill in facilitating community solidarity and fostering community engagement.
